A little-known show on a little-known station, I found it quite by accident. I have been consumed with curiosity ever since. What is it about MXC (Most Extreme Challenge) that leaves me unable to change the channel, while I continue to obsess about what this show actually is?

With so many to choose from, how do you pick just one? But when there’s one channel that you go back to, time after time, one channel that you turn your TV to as soon as you turn your TV on, it’s your favorite. And for me, my hands-down favorite for years has been the TV Guide channel. Why this channel? Because, it is fabulous.

The ratings war is on, and ABC is using their considerable arsenal to knock CBS out of all the top slots. CBS’s big hit CSI has been pushed even further down the list. What fantastic show has wrought this change? Is it something intense, and dramatic? Something light and funny? What show could be great enough to push CSI out of the way? Believe it or not, it’s the reality hit Dancing With the Stars. Come on, y’all, are you watching this?

I’m not a big fan of MTV reality shows. I know that makes me unusual, but it’s true. A lot of it seems a little too contrived for my taste. There was one show, however, that I loved. And, even years after I have failed to find this show on MTV, I have asked people, “Hey, do you remember that show Fear? I didn’t forget. But then, neither did MTV. If you do remember Fear>, you will either love or hate VH1’s newest reality installment, Celebrity Paranormal Project…because it’s the exact same show. With one exception.

In a rare original series from the SciFi network, an investigative team will explore famous legends (like Bigfoot) using scientific principals and evidence. This alone does not make for a winning show (how many times can we see something about Bigfoot?), but a favorite face from reality’s past can always bring in viewers that may not ordinarily tune in. In my case, at least, it’s true. But now that I’ve seen the show, I’ll tune in every week to SciFi Investigates…but not because I’m interested in learning what really went down in Roswell.

I know that PBS has a bit of a reputation for being nothing but learning-minded TV. But let us not forget that, over the years, PBS has given us some really great broadcasting. Need I mention Sesame Street? Frontline? And if you haven’t checked out Nova, the most-watched scientific television series in the world, then you’re definitely missing out.

Okay, so have you seen the Brawny paper towel commercials featuring clips from the “Brawny Academy? I’ve seen more than my fair share of “joke commercials in my day (arguably a concept that was invented by Saturday Night Live), so when I saw these Brawny commercials I sort of laughed them off. Cute commercials, right? Then…I got wild one day, and went ahead and logged onto the site. It’s real, and it’s a real online web cast of a real online reality show. About paper towels? Well…kinda.

It started out in 1976 as something of a “little brother to the ratings smash hit Match Game, the game show that had everyone filling in the blanks and laughing about it. But soon, the spinoff surpassed its parent program to become one of the most successful game shows in history. The show’s initial success is almost always attributed to one man, the original host and one that I’ve paid homage to myself, Richard Dawson. Thirty years later, and long after Dawson’s departure from the show, however, Family Feud is still hanging around. Why does this game show endure despite constant set changes and the fact that they apparently decide on their next host by picking names out of a hat?

If you feel like you’ve already seen it all, have I got a show for you. Television, which always tries to be shocking, has at least one more surprise in store. Does anybody else remember a certain muscle-bound, mohawked man who calls himself simply Mr. T? If you were a fan of the A-Team and have been wondering (for over a decade) where he’s been, look no further than TVLand…for a new original show.

In recent years, CBS has been leading the ratings for broadcast television. The extraordinary ratings of CSI has led to a bevy of similar shows and spin-offs. But did CBS put too many eggs in the CSI basket? Lately, ABC has been doing their best to topple the king of broadcast TV – and they just may be winning the ratings war.

The latest trend for celebrities suffering from low popularity has been to find themselves a reality show, to get in front of the cameras and somehow grab public attention again. When you need a reality show, it’s a smart move to go to a predominantly “reality network…like, for example, the Travel Channel.

When MTV, Music Television, first came to cable in 1984, it was something never-before-seen. Music, after all, was for the radio – not for television. Since its beginning, MTV has become a cable television pioneer and is at least partly responsible for the reality resurrection that created waves with every other television network in existence. Way before CBS thought up Survivor, MTV was showing viewers a unique brand of reality they called The Real World. When it comes to reality, MTV has long been a pioneer of the genre.
