Last week, thanks to Amie, I had the opportunity to interview Jason Cameron, host of the DIY series Desperate Landscapes and Man Caves.
Jason is a carpenter turned actor turned carpenter/host for the two shows. He’s 39, married, a personal trainer, and a former college athlete.
In my interview, I found him to be engaging, friendly, and funny.
I chose to talk to him primarily about Man Caves, as having one is my guy fantasy.
TVBloggin: I am the most unhandy man in America. My wife is the handy one in our household. It’s funny, but hammers just don’t fit my hand.
Jason Cameron: I can find a hammer that will fit your hand. (laughs) You learn by doing to get over the hump. Once you actually start on a project, it’s not really that difficult.
I look at it like cooking. If you can read a cook book or how to make something, you can do the same thing with home improvement. When I’m doing the showâ€â€some of these guys have no skillsâ€â€by the end, they are building a wall.
TVBloggin: Ok, what’s a “man cave?
JC: It’s different for everyone. It’s just a space they can relax. It is their space. They don’t have to worry about hanging things up or cleaning things up. We focus on what they guy wants. Usually, the house “belongs to the woman.
I’m all about earthy tones, rocks. I use a lot of rocks and steel. If they’re a sports enthusiast, we work with that.
TVBloggin: So, how do I convince my wife to let me have a man cave?
JC: Tell her you’ll agree with her on everything else about the house if you can have your way with the man cave.
It’s nice to have that one space that’s all about us and they have no input. If they’re willing to give us that one space, there you go.
TVBloggin: Do you have a man cave?
JC: I’m building a man cave for everyone else I don’t have one myself. (laughs) I live in a 1000 square foot condo in Hoboken, NJ.
To buy a house in Hoboken, we’re talking millions.
TVBloggin: What’s the typical budget for one of your Man Cave projects?
JC: We have a $1,500 budget. Getting labor for free on the show and products donated for product placement helps a lot though. We did a cigar lounge and built a display style humidor. That adds up very fast.
TVBloggin: Have you ever been compared to This Old House’s Bob Vila?
JC: I haven’t been compared to Bob Vila. (laughs) I used to watch him all the time. I watched Norm Abrams and admire him.
TVBloggin: What’s the reaction been to Man Caves?
Guys seem to like it. Tony Siragusa (co-host), the Goose, he has all the fun, I do all the hard work. (laughs) What better guy than the Goose to hang out with?
TVBloggin: What are the Man Cave rules?
We always say no women allowed but I’m sure that’ll change.
No girly colors. No babies in the room. No flowers.
